If your family is anything like ours is, you probably have a few drawers filled with old sweaters that nobody wears anymore. Some may have holes in them. Others, especially kids’ sweaters, may have become too small or have stains that can’t be removed without destroying the sweater altogether. What can you possibly do with all of those old sweaters beside give them to Goodwill? Well, how about a project that will let you repurpose old sweaters into useful gear that can make all the difference during the winter.

When it’s wintertime, mittens always seem to be in short supply in our household. They wear out or get lost one-by-one. So, why not make mittens out of sweaters? You can kill two birds with one stone that way. You make good use of those old sweaters and get relatively new mittens at the same time. The kids just love them. We also thrilled our youngest daughter by making little sweaters and tiny mittens out of an old sweater for her dolls. They are so cute. It’s truly amazing because those dolls and their little sweater/mitten sets are some of the few things that she really takes good care of.

Making mittens out of sweaters is much easier than you think. Even somebody who doesn’t sew well can make them with little effort. And, they can be embroidered, too. Making mittens out of sweaters requires very little in the way of supplies or equipment. All you need to start making mittens out of sweaters is an old wool sweater, a marking pen, scissors, straight pins, a needle and thread, embroidery floss, and some buttons. All the step-by-step instructions needed to make the mittens are available with a video to help show you the process.
