Nothing says the holidays like luminaries. They flicker and the candlelight dances all around the area, giving it a magical glow. Some of our neighbors get together on Christmas Eve and put luminaries up and down their driveways. It’s a wonderful way to usher in Christmas and it gives us all a warm togetherness feeling that we can remember all year long when our busy lives give us so little time to get together and do something so meaningful.

So, back inside, whether it’s Christmas or one our other favorite holidays, we were trying to think of something we could custom make that would give us that warm and fuzzy feeling like the outdoor luminaries. We were thrilled to find a website that had a description and instructions for making photo luminaries. What a great idea! Being lovers of all things luminary, we were quite excited. We have tons of family pictures on our computers, so we started sorting through some of them to pick out the ones that would work for our photo luminaries.

Then, one of our kids came up with the best idea. Why not use pictures from specific times of the year to make seasonal photo luminaries? We liked that idea a lot. We dug through our photos and found summer vacation photos and turned them all into 4th of July photo luminaries. Easter and other spring photos made gorgeous Easter luminaries. Christmas was the most fun though. We had plenty of winterscape family pictures, as well as ski trips, pictures of our Christmas decorations and Christmas morning. When we put them altogether, they made gorgeous festive Christmas photo luminaries. One other great idea that we had for photo luminaries that works for any holiday are vintage photos. We found photos of some of relatives from the past that were sepia-toned because the photos were so old. They worked great. We also found some vintage photos online and made some more. And, whether you make your photo luminaries from vintage photos or newer family photos, they also make excellent gifts, especially for grandparents.

So, where do you find the instructions for these photo luminaries? This amazing tutorial can provide all information you need to with photos that guide you through the creative process from printing photos on vellum to taping them onto the glass jars and adding candles. So, give it a try and make new flickering memories of your own.
