If you have little kids in your house, and they’re fascinated with how tall they are getting, you know how important a growth chart can be to keep track of their growth. They seem to shoot up like weeds overnight, but knowing how much they have grown and when it happened is an important thing to track. It’s fun for them and important for you to see how they are progressing each year.

So, we thought it would be fun to take the idea to the next level. We searched online until we found a great DIY growth chart project that would be fun to make and easy to use. We found detailed instructions for one that looks just like a real ruler. While it was easy to make, the fact that it also helps teach the kids about measurement is a bonus. Since we have four kids, we actually thought of making one growth chart per child. But, since they are so competitive, we decided to use a different colored marker for each and put it on the same growth chart, so they could see who is growing the fastest.

They get so excited during our weekly (yes, that was weekly) measuring sessions. We thought that monthly or even bi-monthly would suffice for our kids, but since we just recently made their DIY growth charts, they wanted to take weekly measurements just for fun. It doesn’t even seem to bother them that there usually isn’t much change in such a short time. We expect that the thrill will probably wear off fairly soon and they’ll segue to monthly measurements. But, for now, we’re having a great time with the weekly sessions and they’re learning a lot about taking measurements.

To make a DIY growth chart, all you’ll need is a 2X10, some three-inch number and letter stickers, a pencil, some markers, and a ruler. The rest of the step-by-step instructions (with helpful photos) will walk you through the process and provide you with a great project that your family will love.
