A great way to save money on the cost of water is to collect rain water that comes down from your roof. This can easily be done by using a rain barrel you can make at home. Making your own DIY rain barrels will be cheaper than buying new ones.

You can make a variety of DIY rain barrels at home with a few supplies, the right equipment, and a little free time.


* Food grade plastic barrel
* 1-inch to 3/4-inch reducer
* All weather silicone or a similar sealant
* 1/8-inch screen (8-inch x 8-inch)
* Two six-inch flower pots
* 3/4-inch faucet
* Teflon tape
* 1 1/2-inch overflow adapter
* Six inches of 1 1/2-inch hose


* 1 1/2-inch hole Saw
* Round file
* Rubber mallet
* Power drill
* 6-inch hole saw
* 1 3/16-inch drill bit
