Have you ever heard of baked marbles? You’ve may have seen them on occasion but never really thought you could make them on your own. Well, maybe it’s time you gave it a try. Baked marbles are used in decorating and making them is a fun and interesting process.

To make the baked marbles, put a number of marbles in an oven safe container, and bake them for about twenty minutes at about 500 degrees Fahrenheit. Once you have them heated up, drop them into ice cold water – the colder the better. The sudden temperature change causes the marbles to crack in a vein like pattern and into little tiny pieces that are still attached to each other. However, they also attain a beautiful sparkly near luminescent quality that make them look like jewels. A beautiful and memorable result is unlike anything you’ve seen before.

Now what do you do with them? One idea is to place them in a container surrounding a candle and as the candle burns down the light is reflected in glorious patterns throughout the marbles. Other ideas include using them to make jewelry. If you do it right you can make necklaces and bracelets and broaches from them. Are you into art and sculpting? By stacking them in different ways you can create beautiful centerpieces, paperweights, and other items that can be used for gifts. It is a handmade gift that is unique, original, and reflects light in spectacular ways.

It seems that clear glass or what we used to call cat’s eye marbles work best. Solid color marbles won’t show the cracks and sparkle as beautifully as the clear glass ones.

Keep in mind, there are a few bits of warning when it comes to a project like this. Be aware that you may occasionally lose a marble or two during the baking or during the dredging in cold water stages. With that in mind, when you bake them use something such as a baking pan and place only a handful of marbles in the oven at a time. Also, be sure to use caution. Consider using oven mitts and safety glasses for any operation like this to be on the safe side. Truthfully, the biggest risk may come from being singed from a hot pan.
